WEEK TEN: what people are working on for their final

WEEK NINE: reworked groovystuff board

My design focuses on how two different materials such as the teak and iron could come together in order to create a unified whole. This unique joint allows both the teak and the iron to keep their individual properties as well as clasp one and other in a harmonious embrace.

WEEK SIX [bookSMART]

ABOUT THE DESIGN 

Book smart: being able to succeed scholastically but not necessarily in the real world.


This definition inspired me to think about students; their necessities and what they, as college students, are exposed to on a day to day basis. As a large part of the education system students are required to purchase and use textbooks as a way to further their understanding of specific topics. Generally, students are able to sell back their no longer needed textbooks, but this is not always the case.

This being said, what happens to the textbooks that are no longer in use? This is where they term “book smart” came into play and is being redefined in the sense of reclaiming out of date textbooks and using them to create something new, unique, and sustainable.

As my design developed I was able to propose a seat that captures the process in which a textbooks life is based upon. In the beginning it is full of new and important knowledge, within several years, new editions are being developed, updating and adding to this knowledge, making the previous textbook invaluable. This seat depicts the solidity and importance on one end providing seating for people. As the seat progresses it begins to disintegrate into an insignificant state, which then allows for the new function of shelving.


SPECIFIED FURNISHING
Folding bookshelves is an adaptable yet simple shelving system which allows for various miscellaneous items to be displayed. Because this is a retail space that provides a wide variety of goods this system can provide a flexible way in which to display them.

I chose to specify this shelving unit for a number of reasons. Because of this retail space being multifunctional as well as not knowing specifically the items that will be sold in the space these shelves will for for versatile as well as create a wall of interest, since they are adjustable.

MY DESIGN



For my design I wanted to focus on using textbooks due to the fact that many textbooks go out of date after a few years when a new updated edition comes out. When this happens the bookstore will no longer by them back and student have no use for them because they are out of date. My question is where do all the textbooks go after students have no use for them?
I wanted to create some sort of seating with the textbooks. I want it to be more of a sculptural art piece that is also functional. I believe that this design, if implemented correctly could send out a message that things can be reused in unsuspected ways.

WEEK FIVE [what GroovyStuff thinks]

GROOVYSTUFF response to my design.

"beautiful design, we are running out of recycled iron so we would need to persue using new iron. We really like the design and want for you to make some refinements coffee table at 18"
Our favorite is the sofa table.
Please resubmit a livingroom table set after refinements have been made, coffee, end,sofa tables.

WEEK FOUR [Embrace Table Collection]












While deep in thought about Groovystuff’s mission of recycling reclaimed Teak from Thailand and creating unique modern rustic furniture, I wanted to create a design that was not only unique but
consistent with the design style that Groovystuff is composed of.
As a result, my design focuses on how two different materials such as the Teak wood and the iron wheel rim could come together in order to create a unified whole. Considering that the teak and the iron are very different in quality, I used this contrast as a way to join them. The solid, bold form of the wood and the delicate way in which the iron can me formed allowed me to produce a dynamic joint that forms a transition from one material to the other that embraces the natural qualities of each material. This unique joint allows both the teak and the iron to keep their individual properties as well as clasp one and other in a harmonious embrace.

Iar333: Light sketch series two



Metamerism


A)    a) Studio Space.
B)    b)  The purpose of the lighting is a sparkle light that directs light into specific areas.
C)    c)  LED.
D)   d)  The LED gives off a cool light form.
E)     e) Creates an enchanting atmosphere because of the pattern and rhythm the light can create.
F)   f)  This light does not work well in the studio space because there is too much competing light sources within the space.



A)   a) Material (IARC) library.
B)   b) The purpose if the lighting is to provide consistent lighting throughout the space, which is considered ambient.
C)   c)  Fluorescent.
D)    d)The fluorescent light gives off a warm hue that is visually pink.
E)     e)The warmth of the fluorescent light creates a relaxing environment.
F)   f)  Yes, it does work well, although it is lit in pockets. It would be good to have spot lighting in specific areas, which would provide better lighting for reading.



A)    a) Walkway of third year studio.
B)    b) The purpose of this lighting is to provide a spotlight for pin up spaces.
C)   c)  Multi reflector.
D)   d)  The multi reflector lamp gives off a warm spot of light.
E)    e)  The warmth of the light creates a cozy feeling.
F)    f)  It does not work well because the range of the spot of light is not large enough for the average presentation board. The light projected is irregular.

B)    b) The purpose of this light is to provide task lighting when working at ones desk.
C)   c)  Incandescent.
D)   d)  The incandescent lamp gives off a warm light.
E)    e) This warm task light tends to create an environment of tension and anxiety.
F)    f)  It does work well because it serves it purpose as a task light by not flooding into adjacent areas.
